1984 WSA: Conference for a new national libertarian workers organization
16 May 2011
A few weeks ago, there were a couple of internal WSA conversations about the founding intent of the WSA. I thought it would be interesting to see what our intentions were near 3 decades ago. The substance of the Conference Call letter appears below, with a couple of notes and document links.

I have also taken the liberty of transcribing an article W.V. Gordon and I wrote on the founding conference. This article appeared in the north american newspaper STRIKE! (a paper many of us also participated in working on, along with "ideas & action".

CNT: 100 years of Anarchosyndicalism (1910-2010)
02 Nov 2010
CNT celebrates a 100 years of existence. It's the centennial of a people and the invaluable fights of thousands of people who during these 100 years have given the international working class an exemplary tool to be followed, through its own culture, self organizing capacity, radical tactics, popular extension and revolutionary actions with the aim of building an anti-authoritarian and mutually supportive society.

On November 1, 1910, in the Fine Arts Center of Barcelona, the CNT - Confederación Nacional de Trabajo in Spanish or the National Confederation of Labor - was founded. This organization, successor to the Spanish chapter of the 1st International (1870), was born in the workers movement as the first independent union organization in Spain.

Adopting the internationalist theme of “the emancipation of the workers will be the undertaking of the workers themselves, or will fail,” CNT held in safekeeping popular rebellion which, as a undercurrent of society itself, opposes Power throughout history. This popular feeling emerges triumphal at times throughout history, from the Egyptian Middle Empire to the French Revolution, planting the seeds for the only historical events where humanity has made giant strides in gains of liberty, justice, equality, dignity and progress.

A review of Vadim Damier's 'Anarcho-syndicalism in the 20th Century'
08 Jun 2010
For those who can read Russian, Vadim Damier’s two-volume study of the International Workers’ Association (IWA) is a comprehensive history of the worldwide anarchist labour movement in the early 20th Century. For the rest of us, Malcom Archibald has translated what is essentially a streamlined version of Damier’s larger work into English. Anarcho-syndicalism in the 20th Century is a broad survey of a movement often marginalised by Marxist academics, and is a welcome addition to the existing literature on anarcho-syndicalism. As Damier illustrates, anarcho-syndicalism was far from a outmoded, ineffective or petty-bourgeois movement — the practice of direct action and revolutionary struggle controlled and self-managed by the workers themselves extended to all countries of the world.

Libertarian statement of solidarity with the comrades in Oaxaca, Mexico
17 May 2010
International libertarian organizations condemn the tragic events of 27 April 2010, when a solidarity caravan of observers bound for the Autonomous Municipality of San Juan Copala (Oaxaca, Mexico) was subjected to a cowardly attack by paramilitaries linked to governor Ulises Ruiz Ortiz, resulting in the death of comrade Beatriz Alberta Cariño Trujillo and Finnish comrade Jyri Jaakkola.

First of May 2010: Organize and fight against the capitalist exploitation!

At the time of writing, the attacks on the working conditions, pay and jobs are gathering pace across the world. The capitalist crisis that started in 2008 was supposed to be over by now, but yet economic problems continue to escalate with workers having to defend jobs and conditions across the globe. Meanwhile the big capitalist investors and hedge funds continue to gamble with the future of whole nations in the pursuit of ever higher profits.
